What time is it? SHOWTIME!
May 19, 2017 and July 9, 2017
May 19, 2017 and July 9, 2017 were the two days that I saw Hamilton: An American Musical. Two awesome, amazing, thrilling days. Before I saw Hamilton, my favorite musicals were The Phantom of the Opera and Wicked. They are both great musicals. But Hamilton is something else. It’s on another level. It’s without a doubt, my favorite musical/show/performance I’ve ever seen.
The genius that is Lin-Manuel Miranda is hard to comprehend. I’ve listened to the Broadway cast album of Hamilton: An American Musical countless times. I know most of the words. I’ve seen the musical TWICE now in San Francisco. And yet, each time I watch it, listen to it, or watch the documentary of the behind the scenes, I learn something new. I’ll realize how the smallest line ties into a different part of the show that I never noticed before. It’s one of those things where the more you see/hear/learn about it, the more amazing it gets. I don’t get sick of the music. The more I memorize the words, the more incredible they get. I have absolutely nothing but LOVE, pride, and amazement for this show.
Who knew that it would be so profound this year? So many lyrics are resonating to be so true this year. Immigrants, we get the job done!, Fools who run their mouths off wind up dead, and my favorite line sung by Angelica Schuyler:
We hold these truths to be self-evident
That all men are created equal
And when I meet Thomas Jefferson
I’m ‘a compel him to include women in the sequel!Work!
I love every character and am amazed by everyone that plays them: Alexander Hamilton (incredible man), Aaron Burr (also incredible, just on the wrong side of history), Marquis de Lafayette (hello Guns and SHIPS!), King George the 3rd (provides the best comedic relief), Eliza Hamilton (most patient woman in the world), Angelica Schuyler (WOMEN POWER), Thomas Jefferson (also provides some comedic relief)… there are so many. Just picture every character in the show listed here.
The cast is incredible. I was lucky to see the original tour cast the first time, with everyone performing that night (no understudies). The second time I saw it, the understudies for Alexander Hamilton, Eliza Hamilton and Angelica Schuyler performed. They were so good! The understudy to Alexander Hamilton, Ryan Alvarado, from afar looked just like Lin-Manuel Miranda, so I pretended that it was Lin the whole time. Joshua Henry, who plays Aaron Burr, is just unbelievable. He might be the best performer I’ve seen. He just puts everything he has into the show and gives me all the feels.
I feel so luckily that I was able to wait online for 3.5 hours to get tickets to the show. I didn’t start listening to the music until I had those tickets in my hand, knowing full well I’d love it and become obsessed with it. I’ve fallen in love with this show. It’s moving, joyful, surprising, terribly sad, hilarious, and it has some of the best songs I’ve ever heard! Even if you can’t get tickets to see this show, just listen to the album (IN ORDER!). The entire show (with the exception of 1 scene) is on the album. This also means that the entire show is sung/rapped. Amazing. Please listen to it. Do it. You’ll LOVE It.
