Room Re-Decorating!

Spring Cleaning in October

It’s that time of the year, where I get the urge to purge!  Some get it in the spring, I, apparently, get it in the fall.  Also, let’s not kid ourselves, I haven’t purged and de-cluttered in several years.  I am pretty easy going when it comes to my room.  I leave clothes on my bed every once in a while,  I have dust that tends to pile up more than I’d like, and I usually don’t care enough to do anything about it.  But, sometimes, I reach a point where I just can’t continue with how things look.  This urge hit me about 3 weeks ago, and I had to wait until I had a free weekend to dedicate to the task of cleaning my room, going through all my junk, getting rid of some pieces of furniture, and then heading to IKEA to buy myself a lovely arm chair.  I’ve wanted a solid chair in my room since I moved in to my apartment, SIX YEARS ago.  And yet, I never got one – too much stuff!

So – finally – last weekend, I went for it.  I got rid of an 8-cube piece of furniture, donated it to the street, and about 30 minutes later, it was gone!  This is what I love about SF – people love free stuff! By the end of the day, I had about 12 huge bags of things to donate, including: 57 VHS tapes (don’t ask), 8 books, 28 DVDs, 2 wallets, 3 purses, 4 coats, 8 dresses, 4 pillows, 3 sweatshirts, 14 pairs of heels, rain boots, and a few pairs of pants and shirts.  Needless to say, it filled my Subaru station wagon completely.

I was able to consolidate my bookcase to include my important paperwork, moved around some pieces of furniture, and voila, I had a spot for my chair!  I still had to get the chair though.  The next day, I went on a solo trip to IKEA.  Now, I’m all for girl power and doing things on my own.  But let me tell you. A solo trip to IKEA is super hard. No one to bounce ideas off of.  No one to help move boxes to and from the cart.  No one to wait in line for you while you run to the Christmas section and freak out because it’s only October and yet you’re secretly (not so secretly) super excited about it.  But I did it.  Hauled this massive box for my new beautiful armchair, a lamp, two shoe racks, two rugs, 10 photo frames (gallery wall!) and a handful of random things to the car, and then up my 3 flights of stairs.  Several hours later, my room was done!  It’s now light and airy, open, comfy, soft colors and is my new favorite place to relax.  And dang, that chair looks and FEELS so good.

Here’s the before pictures from the work done on Saturday:
